*The student activities listed here are for the Alaska Native Stories: Using Narrative to Introduce Expository Text lesson plan. They are to be completed in class over the course of 2 days, each with 50 minute blocks.*

Monday 12/1:
1. Take a look at the KWLQ Handout below and begin by filling out the chart topic as "sandhill crane." Only fill in columns K and W, referring to your topic "sandhill crane."kwlq.jpg

2. Using the computer in the classroom, access the website Stories of Our People in Alaskool and click on the link on the left hand side that says "Crane and His Blue Eyes." A story will be read aloud that you must pay close attention to!

3. After listening to the story, we will discuss it together as a class focusing on the main characters, the setting of the story, what you learned from the story, why you think the story was told, what the problem in the story was, how the problem is solved, what you would have said to the crane, and if you were the crane what would you have done.

4. After discussing as a class, you will log on to the Kidspiration program on the computer in the classroom and create your own concept map that details the story and it's characters. *Below is an example of a map for the book Charlotte's Web to help get you started:

5. After you have completed your concept map, you will go to the website International Crane Foundation, click on "Kids" and then click on "Crane Species" on the left. Take a look around and read about different cranes and their similarities and differences. Choose a specific crane to read more about and write a short report on the crane using the Stapleless Book on the classroom computer only. *Make sure to include what the crane looks like, what type of food it eats, it's body type, where it lives, and any drawings of the crane that you would like to add!*

Tuesday 12/2:

1. You will continue this lesson by finishing up any last minute details on your report in the Stapleless Book (This should only take you 5 minutes.) Using the classroom computer, you will then log onto Kidspiration and view your concept map that you composed yesterday in class. We will discuss our maps together as a class.

2. You will be split into 2 groups, one group being the Narrative Text and the other being the Expository Text. You will be supporting the group you are in by thinking of the benefits of having that type of text. (*Example: If you are in the Expository group, you could say that Expository stories are helpful because you learn real life facts about things.) Each group must come up with four reasons as to why their text is helpful.

3. Each group will present their reasons in front of the class using the Interactive Whiteboard while the other group asks them questions about their text. After the question and answer session, you will compile a final summary that tells WHY both types of text, Narrative and Expository, are important.

4. Finally, you will complete your KWLQ chart from yesterday, filling in the L - what you learned and Q - what other questions do I have and where can I find the answer, parts.
